Happy Feet for Children & Youth · Ages 5–16
Growing up with music.
Music and movement for school-age children and teenagers, in three age groups so that each one works at the right level. Groups are being planned now, so register your interest and tell me your child’s age.
Three age groups
The same approach, growing with the child.
-
Ages 5–8
Lower primary
The step on from Early Years. Children now take part on their own, without a caregiver in the room.
- Songs, stories, and movement games with live piano.
- Feeling a steady beat, and hearing fast and slow, loud and soft, high and low.
- Listening, waiting, and taking turns in a group.
- A foundation for learning an instrument, now or later.
-
Ages 8–12
Upper primary
More challenge and more independence, for children who are ready to think about how music works.
- Rhythm patterns, metre, and phrase, learned by stepping, clapping, and singing them.
- Coordination tasks that ask the hands, feet, and voice to do different things.
- Making up short pieces in small groups.
- Skills that support instrumental lessons, theory, and aural work.
-
Ages 12–16
Secondary
Sessions pitched for teenagers, with real musical substance and room for their own ideas.
- Complex rhythm: changing metres and one rhythm set against another.
- Phrasing and expression, explored through movement and then applied to their own instrument or voice.
- Improvising and creating original group pieces.
- Useful for students in band, choir, orchestra, or dance, and for those preparing for music exams.
Why music and movement
For children who play an instrument, and those who do not.
Children understand music most readily when they can move to it. A beat that has been walked, a phrase that has been sung and shaped with the arms, is understood in a way that stays.
No instrument or earlier training is needed. For children who do learn an instrument, these sessions build the listening, timing, and sense of phrase that their playing draws on.
- StatusGroups for each age band are being planned. Your enquiry helps decide which open first, and when.

Who leads it
Pianist. Educator. Dancer.
Every session is led in person by Khew Yun Zhen, founder of The Piano Odyssey and Happy Feet.
She brings together an established career in piano performance and teaching, close to three decades of dance experience, and ongoing professional training in Dalcroze education. The music is played live at the piano and shaped to the group in the moment, so the session follows the people in the room.
