Happy Feet for Musicians & Dancers

Understand music from within.

For instrumentalists, singers, dancers, and teachers who want to work on their musicianship away from the instrument or the barre. We explore rhythm, metre, and phrasing through movement and improvisation, then take that understanding back to your own playing or dancing.

Why movement

What the score and the mirror cannot show.

A phrase has a direction, a weight, and a moment of arrival. You can be told where these are. It is different to feel them in your own body.

When you step a rhythm, carry a phrase through a gesture, or improvise a response to the piano, timing and shape stop being instructions and become something you know. That is the part you bring back to your instrument, your voice, or the studio.

Musicians

For players and singers.

Steadier pulse, clearer metre, and phrasing that breathes. Useful for ensemble playing, where everyone has to feel time the same way.

Dancers

For dancers.

Hear more in the music you dance to: metre, phrase length, harmony changing underneath. Move with the music, not only on the counts.

Teachers

For teachers.

Work on your own musicianship first. For ideas to use with your students, see the sessions for educators.

How we work

Listen, move, improvise.

  • Rhythm and metre: stepping patterns, changing metres, and layering one rhythm against another.
  • Phrasing: tracing where a phrase begins, travels, and arrives, through gesture and through the voice.
  • Improvisation: short exchanges in movement, voice, or at an instrument, responding to live piano.
  • Back to your art: applying what you found to a passage you are playing, singing, or dancing.
  • WhoIndividuals, and groups such as ensembles, choirs, and dance studios or companies.
  • StatusSessions are arranged by enquiry. Tell me your background and what you want to work on.
  • WhereAljunied, or at your studio or rehearsal space for groups.
  • FeesQuoted individually.

Who leads it

Pianist. Educator. Dancer.

Every session is led in person by Khew Yun Zhen, founder of The Piano Odyssey and Happy Feet.

She brings together an established career in piano performance and teaching, close to three decades of dance experience, and ongoing professional training in Dalcroze education. The music is played live at the piano and shaped to the group in the moment, so the session follows the people in the room.
