Happy Feet for Adults · Beginners welcome

You do not need an instrument to begin.

Music and movement for adults who have always wanted to understand music and never had the chance, or who learned as a child and want to come back to it. Adult groups are being planned now, so register your interest and tell me what you are looking for.

Why start here

Begin with what you already have.

You do not need an instrument, and you do not need to read a note. We begin with your ears, your voice, and your body.

You will step a pulse, feel the difference between a march and a waltz, and sing the shape of a melody. Musical ideas that sound technical on paper make sense once you have moved to them.

It is a way into music in its own right, and a strong foundation if you later take up an instrument.

What a session is like

Listening, moving, making.

Listen

The music leads.

The piano is played live. You respond to what you hear: a change of speed, a new metre, a phrase coming to rest.

Move

The body learns first.

Walking, gesture, and simple coordination tasks turn musical ideas into something you can feel before you name it.

Make

You create too.

Short improvisations with voice, movement, or simple percussion. There are no wrong answers, only choices to hear.

Who leads it

Pianist. Educator. Dancer.

Every session is led in person by Khew Yun Zhen, founder of The Piano Odyssey and Happy Feet.

She brings together an established career in piano performance and teaching, close to three decades of dance experience, and ongoing professional training in Dalcroze education. The music is played live at the piano and shaped to the group in the moment, so the session follows the people in the room.
